What Is Gingham Fabric ? At Higgs and Higgs we always carry a great selection of Gingham dressmaking Fabric and interior fabrics, with new and exciting designs and qualities added each season.

Also called Vichy check, gingham has been a much-loved fabric for many years.

So what exactly is gingham? Gingham fabric are even, yarn dyed, alternating horizontal and vertical stripes, which were originally always made with cotton and a white ground. The alternating horizontal and vertical stripes create an even check pattern frequently used for summer dresses, tops and even table cloths.

Now, Gingham is also commonly available in a fabulous array of colour combinations and textiles.

 

How does gingham differ from other checks such as tartan?

Goof question, they are similar but there are key differences. One key difference is that gingham check is always even meaning there is a uniformity in the horizontal and vertical stripes. This leads to the checks are all being the same size. A tartan fabric for example, whilst also a check will tend to not have a uniformity in the stripes causing checks of all different sizes. A windowpane check would be another type of popular check. This is characterised by thinner lines intersecting each other on a consistent basis to create what looks like sash window panes.
