What is Denim Fabric?

Denim is a cotton twill fabric that is woven in a way that makes it very strong and durable. What makes it so popular? A dressmaking fabric it comes in a variety of weights and is typically dyed indigo blue, but it can also be dyed a host of different colours. Denim is extremely versatile and is used to make a variety of clothing items, including jeans, jackets, skirts, and dresses.

Why is it so Popular?

There are many reasons why denim is so popular. Some of the most common reasons include:

  • Durability: It is resistant to tears, abrasions, and fading. This makes it ideal for everyday wear, especially for work or activities that involve a lot of movement.
  • Versatility: It can easily be dressed up or down, depending on the occasion. A pair of blue jeans worn with trainers and a t-shirt can give a cool casual look. Yet the same pair of jeans can be dressed up with some pumps and a blazer.
  • Comfort: Denim is soft and breathable, and it moves well with the body making it ideal for all-day wear.
  • Style: It is a timeless fabric that is always in vogue. A timeless classic for every wardrobe.

Affordability. Availability. Sustainability. Popularity.

  • Sustainability: Denim is made from a renewable resource (cotton), and it can be recycled.

What is meant by oz denim?

Denim oz refers to the weight of one square yard of denim fabric, measured in ounces. The higher the oz, the heavier the denim. Another reason for it being so popular is the different weights can be used for a huge range of items.

Denim is typically classified into three categories based on its weight:

  • Lightweight denim: 4-12 oz - shop here
  • Midweight denim: 12-16 oz
  • Heavyweight denim: 16 oz or above

Lightweight denim is soft and breathable, and it is often used to make summer clothing, such as shorts and skirts. Midweight denim is the most versatile type of denim, and it is used to make a variety of clothing items, including jeans, jackets, and skirts. Heavyweight denim is the most durable type of denim, and it is often used to make heavy duty workwear.

How does the weight of denim can also affect its appearance and feel?

A lightweight denim is often softer and more drapey than midweight or heavyweight denim. Midweight denim is typically more structured than lightweight denim, but it is not as stiff as heavyweight denim. Heavyweight denim is the stiffest type of denim, and it is often used to create a vintage or distressed look.

Here are some examples of how denim weight affects the look and feel of denim clothing:

  • A pair of lightweight denim jeans will be softer and more comfortable to wear than a pair of heavyweight denim jeans. Shop our patterns for jeans here
  • A mid-weight denim jacket will be more structured and flattering than a lightweight denim jacket. Shop our patterns for jackets here
